A pretty fair assessment of the President's online-fueled town hall meeting.

Education consultant, Steve Hargadon, posted some good language on the trends that are driving the future of web 2.0 in the connected age. I shared a stage with Steve at an event for the New England Board of Higher Education.

No real surprise that famous people (and many others) don't write their own tweets. Sad, but not surprising. It shows me that our society still doesn't understand fully how technology and the internet can be used to build community, address serious issues, educate and mobilize people, or even sell products and build brands. More importantly, when the people who don't write their own tweets are still followed and still revered, it shows me that the public doesn't really care (and that's why these folks get away with having ghost tweeters). We deserve better — and some day (soon), I believe we'll actually get it.

Good information (data!) about what people want from "Philanthropy 2.0." Quick personal observation — technology doesn't make the list. Organizations still have a long way to go before they are providing the kind of valuable content and experiences to truly engage donors. This data should help change minds.

Another Blueprint?
by Brian Reich | 26 Mar 2009, 1:27am
Al Gore (my former boss) announced yesterday that he was writing a new book about the climate crisis. His statement read:
“Now that the need for urgent action is even clearer with the alarming new findings of the last three years, it is time for a comprehensive global plan that actually solves the climate crisis.”
Another plan? Another blueprint? Really?
Gore was Vice President of the United States, won a Nobel Prize for his work as a global warming advocate, and launched/leads what many consider to be the nation’s most influential political organization around climate related issues — so he has earned at least the benefit of the doubt. I’m sure the book will be excellent, his writing always has been. Still, I have to believe there is a better way to educate, engage, and ultimately mobilize public support around this issue and/or to demonstrate to political, corporate, and other leaders across the nation that real action is needed.
Scratch that… I know there are better ways (and I have told Gore as much, on several occasions). Oh well.
